Hosting your virtual project
Running a virtual project is like having a three dimensional website. With
a special 3D viewer for virtual worlds you can access the project on an
OPenSim
server somewhere on the internet.  OpenSim grid 'Do It Yourself'
Running an OpenSim grid does not have to be expensive, if you do the installation
all yourself. It is even possible to run OpenSim on your own computer or server
at home or the institute. The software is open source and there are
several good installation instructions to be found on the internet. It only takes time,
a technical mind
and some patience to set up a good running grid. But it is also possible to
rent a ready made grid.
Grid rental
Renting a whole grid on a dedicated server is a good option. You don't have to worry about the technical
implementations, updates and backups, that is all done for you.This way you
have your own account management system and you can immediately start
working on your own grid. The grid is ready to use 24/7 and
the users will work in a closed and safe environment. The smallest
configuration is a dedicated server with account management + one region.
This can be expanded with four extra regions. Other configurations
are also possible.
Extra's
All regions are empty (like you see at the left) but you can also have prefilled regions installed,
like: a region with freebies specially created for education. Clothes,
buildings, funiture, textures, scripts, etc. Lots of ready made and free
OpenSim islands can be found on the internet.
